1. Persona 3 Reload
A full-blooded remake of beloved JRPG Persona 3, Persona 3 Reload not only completely revamps the visual presentation of one of the most highly regarded JRPGs in recent memory, but so too does it also bring all new scenes, character interactions and redone voice over work.
Put simply, if for whatever reason you haven’t played Persona 3 (where you have been??) but are a fan of JRPG titles, then Persona 3 Reload isn’t just absolutely essential to say the least, but one of the very best PS5 JRPG games money can buy.
2. Final Fantasy 16
Representing a complete departure from the usual Final Fantasy fare, Final Fantasy 16 is not only much more linear than its predecessors, but it also places an emphasis on blistering real-time combat and the sort of dark fantasy storylines that even Game of Thrones would blush at.
With some stunning best in class visuals and a collection of the most epic battles the Final Fantasy series has ever seen, Final Fantasy 16 is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for their next Final Fantasy fix, or even for those lapsed fans that have wanted something a little more adult and cutting edge from the long running JRPG franchise.
3. Granblue Fantasy: Relink
Long in development for a number of years, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a gorgeously presented JRPG that not only fills both the screen and the imagination alike with an epic story filled with interesting characters, but so too does it also provide some truly great voice over work too which really fleshes the cast out yet further still.
Awash in colour and boasting some truly epic battles bookended by a surprisingly emotional story, Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a cracking JRPG that effortlessly earns its place near the top of the list.
4. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Adding a delectable sheen to what is already a stellar remake of one of the most famous JRPGs of all-time, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is arguably the definitive way to experience Square-Enix’s stunning Final Fantasy VII remake on PS5.
With a 4K fidelity and 60 FPS performance mode, coupled with massively improved loading times, an all-new photo mode and the brand new Intermission DLC which introduces players to Yuffie and her plight, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the best JRPG you can get on PS5 right now. As an added bonus, if you already own Final Fantasy VII Remake on PS4, you’ll get an upgrade to Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on PS5 at no extra cost.

5. Sea Of Stars
Sea Of Stars is an excellent, retro-inspired RPG any fan of the JRPG genre should play. With feel-good characters, intricate and engaging combat, a stunning soundtrack, and beautiful world with a wonderful sense of adventure, friendship and love, there is so much to adore here.
While the story doesn’t break any new ground, its characters are all charming and endearing, to the point where you would feel like you would want to follow them to the ends of the world and beyond. Sea of Stars is essential for fans of JRPGs.
6. Chained Echoes
Casting players as a group of heroes that must travel around the vast continent of Valandis to bring an end to the war between its three kingdoms, Chained Echoes is a proper throwback to the glory days of 16-bit and 32-bit PSX era JRPGs.
With one of the best stories of any JRPG in recent years, coupled together with an accessible turn-based combat system, extensive crafting mechanics and some truly memorable characters, Chained Echoes came from practically nowhere in 2022 to become one of the very best JRPGs you can buy for PS5.
7. Persona 5 Royal
When Persona 5 Royal released for PS4 a few years back it was, quite rightly, revered as one of the greatest JRPGs ever made and in its trip to PS5, that sentiment remains firmly in place.
Though Persona 5 Royal on PS5 offers precious little over its PS4 incarnation, its heady mix of stylish audiovisual presentation, superb characters and entertaining combat still make it a first stop for anyone who has yet to experience this stellar JRPG.
8. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Described as one of the ‘longest’ Like A Dragon/Yakuza titles ever made, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth looks to be the long-running series most ambitious effort to date. Not only does it have a massive 80 plus hour campaign stuffed with all of the side quests, side activities and general offbeat hilarity one would expect, but so too does Infinite Wealth also pack in a new roguelike mode, an Animal Crossing style side activity and a map that is three times(!) the size of the world seen in 2020’s Yakuza: Like A Dragon.
Throw in some tremendous celebrity guests (see Danny Trejo below), a completely new Hawaiian set adventure and what looks to be the final time around the block for the series long-time protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, and it seems that Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth effortlessly earns its place as not just a top-tier series entry, but one of the best PS5 JRPGs around too.
9. Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Representing something of a paradigm shift for the series as a whole, Yakuza: Like A Dragon forcefully separates from the real-time, roaming arcade style combat of the franchise and instead embraces the sort of turn-based combat and deep job systems that you’d expect to see in a JRPG. And, well, it does those things because it is an RPG. From tip to toe.
Those aren’t the only things that are all new about Yakuza: Like A Dragon either. With long-time series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu stepping aside, it’s up to newcomer Kasuga Ichiban to take over the reins and boy, does he do so with style. Boasting an off-kelter sense of humor that is reflected in the game’s ridiculously over the top summons (you can quite literally make it rain crabs from the heavens), Yakuza: Like A Dragon marks a refreshing and new direction for the franchise and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
10. Octopath Traveler II
An outstanding achievement from start to finish, Octopath Traveler II is soaringly excellent JPRG which takes what made the original such a success and builds on it. It may feel more of the same but why fix something if it isn’t broken?
Fans of classic JRPGs will discover that it doesn’t get much better than Octopath Traveler II, while a massive cast of characters, a sweeping story and some of the best battles ever seen in an JRPG all add up to make Octopath Traveler II completely essential for JRPG fans.
11. Star Ocean: The Second Story R
A full blooded remake of Star Ocean: The Second Story from the original PlayStation, Star Ocean: The Second Story R brings that JRPG classic kicking and screaming into 2023. Star Ocean: Second Story R takes what made the original so great and, instead of reworking it, went out and built a better experience around it.
The excellent art design, the fantastic action combat, and the striking visuals come to life in what is easily one of the best RPGs of 2023 and a blueprint on how to make a great remake while keeping the spirit of the original alive.
12. Tales of Arise
One of the greatest JRPGs of this generation so far, Tales of Arise depicts a sweeping saga of liberation and mystical majesty with next-generation visuals and storytelling that elevate the series as a whole.
For fans of the long-running Tales series and JRPGs in general, it really doesn’t get much better than Tales of Arise with its stunning combat, immersive story and highly memorable cast of characters.
13. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion
One of the most sought after remasters of recent times, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion takes the classic PSP JRPG title and brings it bang up to date for contemporary audiences.
Taking control of Zack, a newly minted member of SOLDIER, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion takes players back to a time before Final Fantasy 7 and depicts the events that led up to the narrative of that game. With its completely overhauled visuals and sound, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 isn’t just an enticing morsel to devour prior to the release of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, the next title in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, but also a great JRPG in its own right.
14. Scarlet Nexus
Set in a far flung ‘Brain Punk’ future where elite psionics wage war with earth shattering telekinetic and pyrokinetic powers, Scarlet Nexus is one of the most stylish JRPGs you’ll play on PS5.
With a dual storyline fashioned by the same talented bods that gave us Tales of Vesperia and an endlessly creative combat engine that intertwines with a stunning anime visual style, Scarlet Nexus is a must have for JRPG fans on PS5s everywhere.
15. Tactics Ogre Reborn
A remastered take on the 2010 version of Tactics Ogre, Tactics Ogre Reborn brings improved visuals and sound to the table, including fully Japanese and English voiced cutscenes together with live soundtrack performances, as well as a vast number of QoL fixes to keep the title feeling fresh.
A JRPG with a bespoke focus on tactical battles, Tactics Ogre Reborn has players attempting to resolve a decades long civil war between three warring kingdoms with in-depth storylines and a broad class system that allows for an extremely broad degree of creative latitude when it comes to fighting in the isometric battles of Tactics Ogre Reborn. Put simply, if you’re a fan of sophisticated turn-based battles with a great story and interesting characters then Tactics Ogre Reborn is for you.
