PUBG is moving from Unreal Engine 4, the game engine it is currently built on, to Unreal Engine 5, and with that comes a slew of new features.
Chief among them being destructible environments, which is sure to shake up the gameplay when the Krafton makes the switch over the course of 2024.
In a video going over the roadmap for 2024, in-game production director Taehyun Kim says that the teams main focus will be two-fold.
Firstly, one of those two goals will be to offer “vibrant gameplay experiences,” informed by the lessons learned last year, where Kim talks about how the team tried to change some of the fundamentals of the battle royale genre.
The shift from the direction the studio took last year also means this year, Krafton will aim to “offer players diverse ways of having fun with the game.”
Secondly, Krafton will focus on finding ways to “enhance our live service,” says Kim. Part of how Krafton aims to accomplish this, is by beefing up the content available to players for their in-game Clans.
The destructible environments doesn’t just apply to buildings, but players can actually dig into the ground, or use an explosive, to create their own cover. The possibilities a destructible area can bring could potentially add a whole new layer of strategy for players.
Currently there’s no hard date for when the switch from UE4 to UE5 will be made, all we know is that the change will be rolled out across the year.
Hopefully we’ll have a concrete date soon. You can check out the full overview for what’s to come to PUBG in 2024 below.
